Personal Development

At HSAEL our personal development at KS5 is centered around broadening opportunities for all and widening the curriculum to include aspects beyond the chosen A-level options for students. Our aim is for every student to leave as well-rounded individuals, who are compassionate and knowledgeable across a broad range of fields and inquisitive about the world around them.

PD Area

Information

Lecture Series

  • A bi-weekly lecture on a specialist subject beyond the A-level curriculum
  • Exposes students to diverse perspectives and cutting-edge research, igniting curiosity and passion for learning.
  • Engaging with experts fosters critical thinking, analytical skills, and networking opportunities, essential to become a leader in their chosen field.

Breadth Studies

  • Students are exposed to a super-curricular discipline that they do not study at A-level such as 4 distinct pathways in:
  • Technology/Computer Science,
  • Languages and Culture,
  • Humanities
  • Statistics/data.
  • They then apply knowledge learnt about this field into an EPQ (worth half an A-level) drawing links between a topic of their interest and the breadth studies subject assigned.
  • An example for medicine could be the ethical concerns within medicine (humanities pathway), or the use of innovations in treatment (technology pathway).

Enrichment

  • Enrichment helps students have a break away from academic studies, boosting wellbeing and engagement with school life:
  • Sports Leaders Pathway: By combining sports, coaching, and first aid training, students gain valuable practical experience, resilience, and confidence.
  • Academic Mentoring can help students grow as leaders in the eyes of the rest of the school and take on responsibilities.
  • Another option is a volunteering placement which can help students gain valuable work experience.
